Marco Rubio declared that the US policy on arms sales to Ukraine remains unchanged, commenting on reports of a corresponding demand from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Guardian publication reported on this.
During a press conference, Rubio was asked about the position that the Russian side might have conveyed during his meeting with Lavrov, specifically concerning the demand to halt American arms supplies to Ukraine.
Rubio emphasized that Washington’s policy has not undergone any modifications.
At the same time, he stated that the US aims to achieve a peace agreement and is prepared to play a constructive role in ending the war.
“We want a peace agreement. We want the war to end. We are prepared to play any positive role to bring an end to the war, but this requires an agreement that will be acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine,” Rubio said.
According to him, reaching such an outcome is not possible in a single meeting or press conference, as it would necessitate prolonged efforts.
Rubio also noted that previous US attempts to facilitate the conclusion of the war have been unsuccessful. However, Washington is willing to re-engage in this process if circumstances change.
He added that the US President desires an end to hostilities and loss of life, as well as the return of Ukrainians to their country for its reconstruction.
“He considers this war senseless. If we can play a part in its conclusion, we will utilize the strength and influence of the United States to do so,” Rubio stated.
Recall that Lavrov and Rubio met in the capital of the Philippines. The meeting lasted 35 minutes. Notably, Washington also confirmed the American side’s intention to discuss the Ukrainian issue during negotiations with the Russian minister.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov once again voiced the Kremlin’s demands for ending the war in Ukraine. Specifically, cynical statements were made regarding negotiations and arms supplies to Ukraine.
