On Wednesday, June 3, a heated political exchange occurred between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Democratic congressmen during hearings before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Instead of constructively discussing foreign policy, the legislators focused on criticizing the cognitive abilities of US President Donald Trump and discussing peculiar personal details.

Accusations of Lying and Videos of a Sleeping President
The hearings quickly devolved into a partisan confrontation, with Republicans praising the diplomat in every way possible, while Democrats resorted to harsh accusations. Specifically, California Congressman Ted Lieu showed the attendees several video recordings in which Donald Trump allegedly slept during official meetings. Following this, the politician directly accused the top US diplomat of providing false testimony to Congress, as Marco Rubio had previously categorically denied ever seeing the president asleep at his workplace.
The Californian Democrat did not stop there and urged the Secretary of State to be honest with the American people, comparing the White House meetings to North Korean-style cabinet sessions. Such rhetoric and a blatant personal attack caused considerable indignation from the administration representative.

Questions About the Election and Oversized Boots
Congresswoman Sarah Jacobs further escalated the situation by deciding to shift the focus from the diplomat’s statement about the end of the war in Iran to domestic political issues. She directly asked the Secretary of State who he believed won the 2020 presidential election, to which he refused to answer, citing the irrelevance of the topic to the hearings. Subsequently, the Democratic Party representative accused him of being unable to acknowledge obvious facts, mentioning not only political events but also a recent Wall Street Journal article stating that Donald Trump buys Florsheim brand shoes for his cabinet members, which visually appear too large for Rubio.
Flustered by this turn of conversation, Rubio initially tried to understand which specific shoes were being referred to, but later confirmed the fact of the gift, curtly stating that the boots fit him perfectly. The atmosphere in the room continued to tense, and after another heated argument with a different congresswoman, the Secretary of State complained that he was not being given any time to respond at all.
“This is not a hearing. This is like a dive tank. What is this?” the diplomat exclaimed indignantly about the legislators’ behavior.
