In Washington, on the eve of the US Independence Day celebrations, a march of white nationalists from the Patriot Front group, whose members are suspected of racism, took place. Hundreds of masked participants walked through the streets of the American capital on Saturday, July 4. The group’s members call themselves “white supremacists.”

Representatives of the organization stated on social media that about 400 of their supporters arrived in the capital. Hundreds of people dressed in the group’s uniform were seen near the Washington Metro.
Judging by the videos published on social networks and the official Telegram channel of Patriot Front, the marchers, to the beat of drums, walked past the Capitol building and the Union Station transport hub.
Group members were dressed in identical blue shirts, khaki pants, caps, sunglasses, and their faces were covered with white bandanas. They carried flags of their organization, the Confederacy, as well as various modifications of the US flag, periodically chanting the slogan “Reclaim America.”
Around noon, the protesters boarded subway trains and disembarked at the New Carrollton station in Maryland, in the northeastern suburbs of Washington.
A spokesperson for the Washington police reported that the department monitored the actions of Patriot Front as part of the exercise of First Amendment rights. According to him, no reports of arrests, complaints, or calls for help related to the march were received.
“The DC Police Department recognizes the right of people to peacefully express their views and remains committed to ensuring public safety and protecting the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia,” he noted.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a human rights organization, the Patriot Front group is known for its surprise actions and uniforms. It was formed in 2017 following the resonant call of nationalists “Unite the Right.”
In a manifesto on the organization’s website, it is claimed that democracy has failed a once-great nation, and a complete reset is needed to “return to the traditions and virtues of our ancestors.”
Former Department of Homeland Security official during the Obama and Biden administrations, John Cohen, who was responsible for counterterrorism and intelligence matters, noted that Patriot Front is trying to position itself as mainstream while simultaneously promoting white supremacist and anti-immigrant ideologies.
Luke Baumgartner, a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University, added that the group’s symbolism includes iconography similar to that of Benito Mussolini’s party fasces.
