Negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow have reached a stalemate, and Washington currently sees no quick diplomatic resolution.

US President Donald Trump, who pledged to swiftly end Russia’s war against Ukraine, is facing a situation where the negotiation process has effectively hit a dead end. Despite claims of nearing agreements, there has been no real breakthrough between Kyiv and Moscow so far.
This is reported in a material by The New York Times.
Trump has previously stated multiple times that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours upon returning to the White House. However, after many months of efforts, his administration is speaking less and less about specific timelines for a peace deal.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already stated that Washington is tired of unproductive negotiations and is ready to assist when a real opportunity for ending the war arises. This indicates that the US does not currently foresee a rapid diplomatic solution.
Sources suggest that Russia is also dissatisfied with the format of contacts with Washington. Moscow reportedly desires not periodic visits from Trump’s special envoys, but a continuous negotiation process with working groups and regular meetings.
Trump himself has occasionally admitted that he underestimated the complexity of the war between Russia and Ukraine. In recent months, he has spoken several times about the proximity of agreements, but the negotiations have yielded no results each time.
Against this backdrop, Ukraine is demonstrating increased confidence on the battlefield. Ukrainian long-range drones and missiles are increasingly hitting targets deep within Russia, including energy infrastructure, factories, and military facilities.
Meanwhile, Moscow continues the war despite significant losses and growing economic pressure. According to Western officials, Russia has lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers killed and wounded, yet Putin still shows no willingness to abandon his maximalist demands.
Analysts believe that the main flaw in Trump’s approach is the reliance on a quick deal rather than a prolonged diplomatic process. The war in Ukraine has proven to be far more complex than pre-election promises of its swift conclusion.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that there is currently a limited “window of opportunity” for a diplomatic resolution to the war, which he believes should be utilized before the onset of the next winter period.
Zelenskyy also reported that representatives of the US President, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, might visit Kyiv in the near future. According to the head of state, the Ukrainian side expects their visit in approximately two weeks.
