A political controversy has erupted in the US concerning a new peace agreement between President Donald Trump’s administration and Iran; a portion of Republicans in Congress has sharply criticized the document and is demanding the White House disclose all details of the arrangements.
The memorandum of understanding signed on June 17th between the USA and Iran, intended to serve as the basis for ending the war and initiating new negotiations, has triggered a wave of discontent, even among President Donald Trump’s own party members.
As reported by CNN, a number of Republican senators have stated that the administration has not provided Congress with sufficient information regarding the conditions of the agreement. Legislators are concerned that the document might involve excessive concessions to Tehran.
According to the memorandum’s text, the USA is expected to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports within 30 days and gradually ease sanctions. In return, Iran commits to opening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and commencing 60-day negotiations for a final resolution of the conflict.
Among the most vocal critics are Republican senators who believe that Washington is essentially granting economic benefits to Iran without adequate security guarantees. Some politicians recall that Trump himself previously harshly criticized the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, labeling it “catastrophic.”
The White House insists that the agreement will help stabilize the situation in the Middle East, restore global oil supplies, and prevent further escalation of the conflict. Concurrently, Congress is already demanding an urgent briefing on all points of the document.
As a reminder, three supertankers flying the Saudi Arabian flag, carrying approximately 6 million barrels of crude oil, have already passed through the Strait of Hormuz. Today, June 18th, a few hours after US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum with Iran to cease hostilities, the vessels navigated the strait.
