Nicholas Rossi, convicted of rape and who staged his own death some years ago to evade criminal prosecution in the U.S., has died in a Utah correctional facility. After fleeing, he resided in Great Britain under a fabricated identity but was ultimately exposed, extradited, and sentenced.
The Utah Department of Corrections disclosed the death of the 38-year-old inmate, as reported by Unilad.
The man’s legal name was Nicholas Alahverdian, though he was widely recognized as Nicholas Rossi. He passed away on June 25th in the medical facility within the penitentiary where he was serving his sentence.
According to the correctional service, Rossi suffered from a number of chronic degenerative ailments. The department noted that he chose to cease his medical treatment, subsequently succumbing to complications.
Rossi was serving time for the sexual assault of two women, which occurred in Utah in 2008. Following two separate trials, he received a combined sentence ranging from 10 years imprisonment to life imprisonment.
Rossi’s story garnered international attention after a fabricated obituary surfaced online in 2020. It claimed the man had died from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, had been cremated, and his ashes scattered at sea. In reality, he had absconded from the U.S. and settled in the United Kingdom, initially in Bristol, England, and later relocating to Scotland.
His flight ended in late 2021. In December, Rossi was admitted to a Glasgow hospital with a severe case of COVID-19. Medical personnel noticed the patient’s resemblance to an individual sought by Interpol, and his identity was definitively confirmed through distinctive tattoos mentioned in the international warrant.
Following his apprehension, Rossi denied his identity. He presented himself as Arthur Knight, asserted he was an orphan from Ireland, and claimed he had never been to the United States. In court appearances, the man frequently used a wheelchair, wore an oxygen mask, and spoke with a distinct English accent. He also contended that the tattoos on his arms were allegedly applied while he was unconscious.
After a protracted legal process, a Scottish court determined that the detained individual was indeed Nicholas Rossi and permitted his extradition to the U.S. Upon his return to Utah, he faced the court again. His claims of mistaken identity were dismissed, and the jury found the man guilty in the rape cases.
Commenting on the convicted individual’s death, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill stated that Rossi made every effort to evade accountability for his offenses. She also remarked that “those who survived his horrific acts can take solace in the fact that he died in prison, aware of the crimes he committed.”
As a reminder, in India, a blogger who regularly showcased her jewelry, cash, and lavish lifestyle on social media fell victim to a robbery.
