The Kremlin complains that the United States is changing its stance on negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine. Russian authorities believe that Washington no longer demands that Ukraine withdraw its troops from Donbas as a condition for dialogue.
Political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko reported this to “Kyiv24”.
Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia – will the situation change?
According to the expert, recent statements by Foreign Minister Serhii Lavrov and Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Yurii Ushakov indicate that the Kremlin has noticed a change in the US strategy.
“Lavrov says this, and Ushakov too, that the US is moving away from the ‘spirit of Anchorage.’ The ‘spirit of Anchorage’ is disappearing somewhere. This means that the Kremlin has also received signals from the Americans or is observing a change in the American position – that the Americans are no longer insisting on the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. So, there are certain changes here. But we need to see how the situation will develop further,” noted Volodymyr Fesenko.
The political scientist emphasized that at this stage, there is no talk of starting negotiations. The final document of the G7 summit, where the issue of peace talks was not mentioned at all, was indicative in this context. Instead, the key focus is on military assistance to Ukraine, particularly on granting licenses for arms production and supplying long-range weaponry.
“The emphasis is on military support for Ukraine, as well as the ‘winter package’ for Ukraine. This is very telling. It’s a signal to the Kremlin that Ukraine will continue to receive support. And if there are negotiations, they will be from a position of strength for Ukraine,” the expert stressed.
Fesenko added that Ukraine is reinforcing this position with its own actions, demonstrating strength through strikes on the Russian rear and occupied territories.
War in Ukraine – latest news
We remind you that at the end of June 2026, three high-ranking Russian officials publicly stated that Washington had violated agreements on ending the war in Ukraine due to a sharp change in the rhetoric of US President Donald Trump and increased Ukrainian drone strikes deep into Russia.
Also, Russian Foreign Minister Serhii Lavrov defiantly claims that the end of the war they started in Ukraine “can be resolved through political and diplomatic methods.”
Earlier, Lavrov announced the conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. According to him, Russia will achieve all its military goals: Ukraine’s neutrality and non-nuclear status, and the repeal of “discriminatory” laws against the Russian language and the Russian Orthodox Church.
Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin also stated that peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia were allegedly interrupted at Kyiv’s initiative.
