French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the US has ceased funding Ukraine but continues to be its ally through the provision of intelligence and weaponry.
Macron made these remarks in an interview with TF1 on the eve of the G7 summit.
According to the French President, during the meeting of the G7 leaders in Évian-les-Bains, he intends to discuss the war in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We need to gather and say: look at what is happening. Ukraine is holding up better than you thought. The civilian population is suffering from Russia,” Macron stated.
He emphasized that he intends to speak with Trump about the necessity of increasing pressure on Russia to compel it to engage in negotiations.
“We need you… I wish for the Americans to say: we are with you, we will continue to help Ukraine, we will increase pressure on Russia,” said the French President.
Macron also noted that the appropriate format for negotiations should involve Ukraine and Russia at the same table, along with Europeans and Americans.
He added that despite the cessation of funding, the US role remains crucial for Ukraine, as Washington continues to provide intelligence and military support.
G7 Summit: Latest News
The G7 summit is taking place from June 15-17 in Évian, France. One of the key topics of the meeting is expected to be Russia’s war against Ukraine and potential ways to end it.
According to media reports, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to participate in a working session with Donald Trump as part of the summit. The Ukrainian President had previously agreed to a personal meeting with him.
It is anticipated that Kyiv and its allies will attempt to persuade Trump to increase support for Ukraine. This includes, in particular, additional Patriot air defense systems, military aid, and new sanctions against Russia.
Earlier, Zelenskyy proposed holding a meeting with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. However, the Russian side, as before, shows no readiness for genuine dialogue on ending the war.
