The issue of Trump making unilateral decisions has been under discussion in the United States of America for quite some time. There have been several prior attempts to prohibit him from doing so. Now, it might become a reality – a bill is being advanced in the Senate aimed at restricting Trump’s military powers concerning Iran.
Trump’s fellow party members have begun to support this bill, siding with the opposition. This is reported by CNN.
Trump is once again to be restricted in his independent decisions regarding the war in Iran
On Tuesday, May 19th, the US Senate supported a bill that would prevent US President Donald Trump from unilaterally making military decisions regarding Iran. Trump will be required to obtain approval from Congress before any actions related to Iran.
The bill passed with 50 votes in favor and 47 against. This was made possible by Republicans – Trump’s party members – beginning to switch to the Democrats’ side. Alongside Democrats, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Bill Cassidy voted for limiting Trump’s authority.
Some legislators supported a bill from the Democrats for the first time. The vote on the bill occurred after the Senate rejected seven previous attempts with a similar proposal.
However, there are doubts that the bill will ultimately pass, as several other Republicans were absent from the vote, which might prevent it from proceeding.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced in April 2026 that Democrats would push weekly for restrictions on Trump’s military powers as long as the Senate is in session.
Some Republicans have stated that Congress should play a role in authorizing war or, at the very least, exercise stricter oversight over Donald Trump’s actions.
War in Iran — latest news:
We remind you that US President Donald Trump announced that he is currently actively preparing and planning a military operation against Iran. In his opinion, such a move is a popular decision that has public support. He is disregarding the opinions of a significant number of Americans.
The head of the White House also clearly outlined the timeframe for a diplomatic resolution, giving Tehran only a few days. According to Trump, this refers to a limited period, approximately until the end of this week or the beginning of the next.
At the same time, Trump noted that he does not plan to elaborate to the public on the prerequisites and reasons for a potential conflict. He added that he simply does not have the time for it.
Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he had decided to postpone the military strike on Iran planned for the upcoming days. He made this decision after appeals from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
They urged him to refrain from the attack, stating that there is still a chance to reach an agreement. According to Trump, a potential deal should guarantee that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons.
Concurrently, Trump stated that the USA is fully prepared for a large-scale military operation if diplomatic efforts fail.
