Russia’s repeated accusations against Baltic countries for providing their airspace for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory are causing “concern” due to “fears of escalation.”

This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to journalists after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Helsingborg, Sweden, according to The Guardian.

“We understand that these countries feel threatened by this, for obvious reasons. So it is a cause for concern, as there is always a fear that something like this could escalate into something more serious,” he said in response to a question about Moscow’s accusations against the Baltic states.

At the same time, the head of the State Department emphasized that Washington is closely following the situation and will cooperate with NATO allies as it unfolds.

“We are concerned about this because we do not want it to lead to a wider conflict that could truly lead to something much worse,” Rubio noted.

Earlier, the ISW stated that the Russian Federation is intensifying efforts to create information conditions for possible future aggression against the Baltic countries. In particular, Moscow’s accusations of alleged cooperation between Ukraine and Latvia in striking the aggressor country are evidence of this.

Threat to Baltic countries from Russia — what is known

Russia has repeatedly threatened the Baltic countries recently.

In particular, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, known as the Kremlin’s mouthpiece on social media, stated that Estonia “belonged to Russia just like Donbas,” effectively expressing territorial claims to the neighboring country.

In Lithuania, four scenarios of Russian attack were outlined, and it was stated that Lithuanian “vatniks” are more dangerous than ethnic Russians living in the country.

Reserve Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Kryvonos suggested that Russia might use massive drone strikes to attack the Baltic countries, as well as employ an extensive network of internal agents.

Meanwhile, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna warned that NATO would strike deep into Russia if Moscow attempted to invade Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania.
